Educational Support Program

Prerana ensures a child his or her basic right to education with the first comprehensive Educational Support Program (ESP) in the country for children from red light areas. The ESP’s holistic approach to working with children addresses needs in education as well as personal and professional development. The ESP provides complementary and remedial education, extra-curricular activities, life skills education, and personal development inputs. The ESP also sponsors older children for suitable vocational training programs to obtain careers in the fields of driving, computer programming, para-professional social worker, para-medical worker, catering, amongst others. Today, Prerana runs 3 ESP’s in the Mumbai red light districts of Kamathipura, Falkland Road and Vashi Turbhe. The ESP aids 350 children every day with their academic aspirations and economic self-sufficiency goals.

*NIOS – stands for National Institute of Open Schools. In view of supporting those youths who have dropped out of school and who have not been able to complete their education we felt that it would be worthwhile to explore the NIOS option for these youths so that they could obtain a 10th passed certificate. In the academic year 2010 we first ventured into this and enrolled 19 students.

*Children’s Collectives: These are groups of children which have been created with different objectives in mind.
